Interlock bricks are the latest advancement in wall construction. These bricks lock into each other without the use of cement mortar, creating a structurally stable wall, which reduces construction cost and time. Nowadays home builders are using interlock brick construction techniques for fast construction on a low budget.
These bricks are made in two widths of 6 inches and 8 inches and are available in varying lengths. Each brick has grooves and locks on its sides, forming a block wall that does not require a cement mortar for binding. These bricks are affordable and earthquake resistant and the Government of Nepal approved interlock brick technology in 2017.

During earthquakes, various stresses act on the structure. Since the motor is the only medium of load transfer, conventional bricks are not fully equipped to transfer seismic loads throughout the structure. If the motor fails, the entire system fails under seismic forces. Interlock bricks are an effective and proven earthquake-resistant construction material. The self-locking system of the bricks allows seismic forces to travel the entire structure evenly.
No need for plastering work so that you can save the construction time also the cost. Since there is no motor use in the construction process, the cost of buying cement, sand, mortar, and stone dust can be ignored. The cost of transportation can be greatly reduced with the cost of efficient labor. This does not require little bar bending work, less cement, and fewer workers, therefore, contributing to the overall cost reduction of the construction project.
This has proven to be the most time-efficient way of construction. Normal conventional bricks should be cured for approximately 21 days, while self-locking bricks should be cured for only 7 days. In addition, the time required to build and heal the structure can be completely reduced. By eliminating all time-consuming tasks, you can complete the project faster.
There are a few drawbacks to this construction method. Since no plasterwork is provided, rainwater becomes a hostage to insects and other undesirable substances. Due to the action of the weather, the bricks may also decompose (especially in the corners). The color of the brick changes as rainwater enters the spaces. It is not advisable to build more than two storeys because interlock bricks alone are not sufficient to hold all the forces acting on the structure.
