Five Main Types of Beam Based on Supports

A beam is a structural element that primarily resists the loads applied to the beam’s axis. The total effects of all the forces acting on the beam are to produce the shear forces and the bending moments within the beam. Beams are characterized by their manner of the support, the shape of the cross-section, length. There are seven types of beam’s, they are as follows:-

Simply Supported Beam:

Simply supported beam both ends are attached or has given the roller support so that the beam can go under the free rotation without any movement of resistance.

It undergoes and bends that depends on the load applied. Simply supported beam with the point loading includes the bridge, beams in the building, and the beds of the machine tools. Vertical reactions produce on the beams.

Continuous Beam:

A continuous beam is a beam in which an indeterminate multi-span beam is a hinged support. One of the continuous beam support and develop the reaction along with the beam. Continuous beams are mainly employ in bridges. This type of beam has more than two points of support along its length.

Cantilever Beam:

In the cantilever beam, the load is apply anywhere on the beam. There are both types of failure – bending and shear. The maximum bending movement occurs on the fixed end of the cantilever beam in which there is a chance of a break down at that end. Cantilever beams support on only one end. This construction allows the overhanging structure without external bracing. The cantilever is construct with the truss or slabs.

Fixed Beam:

The fixed beam is a type of beam in which the structural member uses the bearing loads. It is typically use for resisting vertical loads, bending moments. They can easily restrain enough relative to the stiffness of the beams and the column is consider as fixed.

Over- Hanging Beam:

The overhanging beam is a beam in which it freely supports the two points and has one or both ends extending beyond the support.

Double Over- Hanging Beam:

Double overhanging beam at rotation and movement is produce at the end of the overhanging beam. The double overhanging beam simply supports and cantilever. Both point load and Uniformly Distributed Load axis on the beam.
